I have been part of medical disaster relief missions in both Haiti and Nepal.
In Nepal, I was part of Remote Area Medical’s disaster response team after the earthquake in Nepal with local doctor, Dr. Andrew Siskind. We were sent into the areas which were hardest to access and had to hike in with our supplies. I served as an EMT and scribe, and was put on triage duty. We were part of a small number of foreign medical teams approved by Nepal’s Ministry of Health and the WHO.
On this trip I learned so much about the many levels of coordinating disaster response. I am extremely privileged to have learned from volunteers, both local and expatriate, dedicated to provide excellent care in harsh settings as well as people who exhibited incredible courage and exemplified what it means to care for one’s neighbor and community despite tremendous hardship.
